I am not a very opinionated person. But even I am prone to holding steadfast to certain opinions. One of them is that among all the people who have to work for a living, antique dealers probably have the most interesting job. Call it a career if you will, but most antique dealers I know have such an interesting profession at their disposal that I would willingly trade places with them at any point in time. What prompted me to have this belief is a chance encounter with one such individual, who belonged to (in my estimation) select group of professionals who go under the name of antique dealers.

The is this mall near where I work and I often times stroll along the shops to indulge in some window shopping. One day, I strolled a little longer than usual and found myself in a corner passageway that was tucked away. I could not believe that I had missed noticing this passageway for it wasn’t all that hidden. More curious than anything else, I walked into the passageway to bump into a group of wizened old men sitting around a table playing what seemed to me like a game of Chinese checkers. Needless to mention, these chaps belonged to the select breed we all call antiquedealers.

Seeing me there in their midst, their eyes lit up. But one glance at the middle class me and they were all certain that I had merely stumbled onto them. This however did not prevent them for sharing their fascinating insights with me. On the contrary, the hour or so that I spent with those antiquedealers was among the most treasured memories of my adult life. I learnt so much and discovered so much more about our history and culture that I am pretty sure a masters degree from any of our universities couldn’t have given me anything comparable.

But what impressed me the most about that group of antique dealers was the fact that they all seemed to love their chosen professions and seemed to anticipate the coming of each day with a near childlike excitement. Although the items they dealt with might be from eras gone by, their infectious enthusiasm is something that will continue to live on even when they themselves are no more. I am pretty sure that at least a few others might have been influenced by that group of antique dealers in the same way that I was profoundly impressed.
